Assignments

The schedule below is a tentative schedule of classes and readings. In addition to the research paper that is the centerpiece of the course, you will also be required to write review papers on groups of articles on particular historiographical periods and themes. The articles can be accessed by clicking on the links below that end with the word "Articles." I have also included some samples of the works of various historians for the earliest periods of the course (Greeks, Romans, etc.) so that you can see samples of the works of the major historians in these earlier categories. We will discuss the assignment requirements of the course in the first class meeting.

Please note that I recommended several books in the syllabus. While I do not require that you purchase them, you will find them helpful. You will be looking at historiographical themes and ideas that may be new to you. The Essential Historiography Reader offers some clarification and erudition to the often bewildering trends in historiography. That is why I have recommended it.
